Head of Risk, Mumbai

Credit, fraud and operational risk under one owner. Confidential client, Mumbai.

TL;DR

Our client, a regulated lending business in Mumbai, is hiring a Head of Risk to own credit, fraud and operational risk under a single function. The role reports into the executive team and carries real authority over the lending policy, not only oversight of it.

The client is confidential at this stage. We will tell you who it is before your profile goes anywhere.

What the role owns

Credit policy and its outcomes. The person in this seat sets the rules that decide who gets lent to and on what terms, then owns the loss curves that result. That is the whole job, and candidates who have advised on policy without owning the consequences usually find the conversation goes a different way than they expect.

Alongside credit, the function covers fraud, which at an Indian lender increasingly means first-party fraud and synthetic identity rather than classic application fraud, and operational risk across the lending process.

What the client is looking for

Someone who has owned a loan book through at least one deterioration. The most useful thing a candidate can describe here is a portfolio that went wrong, what the early indicators were, how quickly they were acted on, and what the policy looked like afterwards. Books that only ever grew in benign conditions tell the client very little.

Model fluency matters. Not necessarily building scorecards personally, but being able to interrogate one, understand where it degrades, and judge when a model's decision should be overridden.

The regulatory environment is central rather than peripheral. RBI's governance expectations for NBFCs shape how this function is structured and who it reports to, and the client expects a candidate who is comfortable in that frame.

Process

A conversation with us, then the client's CEO and board risk contact, then a session on a real portfolio question.

Our FinTech Chief Risk Officer guide sets out how these seats are scoped and what the regulatory requirements imply, and the 2027 compensation benchmark covers the bands.
