Head of Payments Business, FinTech, Delhi NCR

A P&L role, not a programme role. Confidential client, Delhi NCR.

TL;DR

Our client, a FinTech operating in Delhi NCR, is hiring a Head of Payments Business to own the P&L for its payments line. This is a revenue-owning role rather than a delivery or programme role, and the hire will carry the number.

The client is confidential at this stage. We will tell you who it is before your profile goes anywhere.

What the role owns

The payments line as a business: revenue, take rate, cost of processing, and the commercial relationships that determine both. The person who takes this sits close enough to the engineering and operations teams to change unit economics rather than only report on them.

In practice that means three things. Setting pricing and managing take rate against processing cost, which on Indian rails means understanding where margin actually exists and where it does not. Owning the bank and network relationships that decide routing economics and success rates. And deciding the product roadmap jointly with the product and engineering leadership, because in payments the difference between a good and a bad quarter is usually a technical one.

What the client is looking for

Someone who has run a payments P&L before, at a payments company, a bank's payments business, or a platform with payments embedded in it. The specific rails matter less than having owned the commercial outcome.

They want evidence of margin work, not just growth work. Anyone can add volume at a loss. The conversations that go well here are about success rates, routing, chargeback and fraud cost, and what each of those did to contribution margin.

Regulatory fluency is assumed rather than tested. RBI's positions on payment aggregation, tokenisation and data localisation set the boundaries of what the business can do, and the client expects a candidate who works inside them without needing to be walked through them.

What this is not

It is not a programme or delivery leadership role, and candidates whose experience is running payments projects rather than a payments business generally do not get through. It is also not a pure partnerships role, though partnerships are part of it.

Process

A first conversation with us, then a discussion with the client's leadership, then a working session on the business itself. The client moves quickly on the right profile.

Our Head of Payments role guide covers what firms assess in this seat, and the 2027 FinTech compensation benchmark shows the bands this level sits in.
